Carpet Installation DIY Guide
Professional carpet installation requires specialized tools and techniques, but DIY installation is achievable with patience and the right approach. Learn how to stretch carpet properly, secure tack strips, and create invisible seams for a professional finish.
Remove Old Flooring
Remove existing carpet, pad, and tack strips. Clean subfloor thoroughly.
Install Tack Strips
Nail tack strips around perimeter, 1/2 inch from wall. Angle pins toward wall.
Install Carpet Pad
Roll out pad, trim to fit within tack strips. Staple every 12 inches.
Measure and Cut Carpet
Measure room, add 6 inches to each dimension. Cut carpet slightly oversized.
Position Carpet
Roll carpet into room. Position with 3-inch excess at each wall.
Attach at Starting Wall
Hook carpet onto tack strip at one wall using knee kicker.
Stretch Carpet
Use power stretcher to stretch carpet to opposite wall. Work from center outward.
Secure All Edges
Hook carpet onto tack strips around entire perimeter using knee kicker and stair tool.
Trim Excess
Use carpet knife to trim excess, leaving 1/2 inch. Tuck edge between tack strip and wall with stair tool.
Create Seams (if needed)
For large rooms, join carpet pieces with hot-melt seam tape. Roll seam with seam roller.
