Engineered Hardwood Installation
Engineered hardwood combines real wood beauty with dimensional stability, making it suitable for basements and over concrete. Learn floating, glue-down, and nail-down installation methods to achieve a premium hardwood look with easier installation than solid wood.
Acclimate Planks
Store boxes in installation room for 3-5 days. Engineered wood is more stable than solid but still needs acclimation.
Prepare Subfloor
Clean and level subfloor. Engineered wood can go over concrete with proper underlayment.
Install Underlayment
Roll out foam or felt underlayment. Use vapor barrier over concrete. Tape seams.
Choose Installation Method
Floating for DIY ease, glue-down for stability, nail-down for traditional feel. Follow manufacturer recommendations.
Start First Row
Place spacers for 1/2-inch expansion gap. Remove tongue from first row for floating installation.
Connect Planks (Floating)
Apply glue to groove of each plank. Click together at angle, then lower. Wipe excess glue immediately.
Nail Down (Alternative)
Face-nail first row. Blind nail subsequent rows through tongue at 45 degrees, 8-10 inches apart.
Glue Down (Alternative)
Spread urethane adhesive with notched trowel. Press planks into adhesive within open time.
Stagger Joints
Offset end joints by at least 6 inches between rows. Use random pattern for natural look.
Cut Planks to Fit
Measure and cut with miter saw for straight cuts, jigsaw for curves around obstacles.
Install Final Rows
Rip to width if needed. Use pull bar to tighten planks. Maintain expansion gap at all walls.
Install Transitions and Trim
Add transition strips at doorways. Install baseboards to cover expansion gaps.
