Hardwood Flooring Installation: Complete DIY Guide
Hardwood flooring adds timeless beauty and value to any home. This comprehensive guide walks you through professional installation techniques for solid hardwood planks, from subfloor preparation to final finishing. Learn how to achieve tight seams, proper spacing, and a flawless finish that will last for decades.
Acclimate the Wood
Store hardwood planks in the installation room for 7-10 days to adjust to humidity and temperature. Stack with spacers for air circulation.
Prepare the Subfloor
Ensure subfloor is clean, dry, level, and structurally sound. Sand down high spots and fill low areas. Check moisture content with meter.
Install Vapor Barrier
Lay 6-mil polyethylene sheeting over concrete subfloors to prevent moisture migration. Overlap seams by 6 inches and tape.
Install Underlayment
Roll out felt paper or foam underlayment perpendicular to plank direction. This reduces noise and provides cushioning.
Plan Your Layout
Measure room and calculate plank layout to avoid narrow pieces at walls. Snap chalk lines as guides for first row.
Install First Row
Start along longest, straightest wall. Face-nail first row 1/2 inch from wall, predrill to prevent splitting. Maintain 1/2-inch expansion gap.
Blind Nail Subsequent Rows
Use pneumatic nailer at 45-degree angle through tongue. Space nails 8-10 inches apart and 2-3 inches from ends.
Stagger End Joints
Offset end joints by at least 6 inches between adjacent rows for structural integrity and visual appeal.
Cut Planks for Fit
Measure and cut planks to fit around obstacles, doorways, and at row ends. Use miter saw for straight cuts, jigsaw for curves.
Install Around Obstacles
Cut notches for pipes, vents, and doorframes. Maintain expansion gaps and use transition strips at doorways.
Complete Final Rows
Rip final row planks to width if needed. Use pull bar to tighten planks into place since nailer won't fit.
Sand the Floor
Use drum sander with progressively finer grits (36, 60, 80, 100) to level surface and remove imperfections. Vacuum thoroughly.
Apply Stain (Optional)
Test stain color on scrap piece. Apply evenly with lambswool applicator, working with the grain. Allow to dry completely.
Apply Finish Coats
Apply polyurethane or oil-based finish with lambswool applicator. Allow drying between coats. Apply 3-4 coats for durability.
Install Trim and Transitions
Install baseboards to cover expansion gaps. Add transition strips at doorways and where flooring meets other surfaces.
