Laminate Flooring Installation Guide
Laminate flooring offers the look of hardwood at a fraction of the cost with easier installation. This floating floor system requires no nails or glue, making it perfect for DIY beginners. Learn the click-lock installation method that delivers professional results in a weekend.
Acclimate Laminate
Store unopened boxes in installation room for 48 hours to adjust to room conditions.
Prepare Subfloor
Clean thoroughly and ensure surface is level within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Remove old baseboards.
Install Underlayment
Roll out underlayment with vapor barrier. Tape seams with moisture-resistant tape. Do not overlap.
Plan Layout
Measure room width and calculate if last row will be less than 2 inches. If so, rip first row narrower for balance.
Start First Row
Place spacers along wall for 1/4-inch expansion gap. Lay first plank with groove side toward wall.
Connect Planks End to End
Angle second plank into first at 20-30 degrees, then lower to lock. Continue across first row.
Cut Last Plank in Row
Measure distance to wall minus 1/4 inch for expansion gap. Cut plank to length with circular saw.
Begin Second Row
Use cutoff from first row if longer than 12 inches. Stagger end joints by at least 12 inches.
Lock Rows Together
Angle entire row at 20-30 degrees to engage long side click-lock, then lower. Use tapping block if needed.
Continue Installation
Work row by row, maintaining stagger pattern. Use pull bar for planks near walls where tapping block won't fit.
Cut Around Obstacles
Measure and mark cuts for pipes, vents, and doorframes. Use jigsaw for curved cuts. Maintain expansion gaps.
Install Final Row
Measure and rip planks to width, accounting for expansion gap. Use pull bar to lock into previous row.
