Remove Baseboards
Carefully pry baseboards from walls using pry bar. Label backs for reinstallation.
Remove Carpet
Cut carpet into manageable strips. Pull up from tack strips. Roll and remove. Pull up pad and staples.
Remove Tack Strips
Pry up tack strips with pry bar. Remove all nails from subfloor.
Remove Vinyl or Linoleum
Cut into strips with utility knife. Use floor scraper to remove adhesive. May require chemical stripper.
Remove Tile
Break tiles with hammer and chisel. Start at damaged tile or drill hole to create starting point. Scrape thin-set.
Remove Hardwood
Use circular saw to cut into sections. Set blade depth to flooring thickness. Pry up sections with pry bar.
Remove Laminate
Remove baseboards and start at one corner. Disconnect click-lock joints. Laminate comes up easily.
Remove Adhesive Residue
Scrape remaining adhesive with floor scraper. Use adhesive remover for stubborn spots.
Remove All Fasteners
Pull all nails, staples, and screws from subfloor. Use pliers or pry bar.
Clean Subfloor
Vacuum thoroughly. Sweep and remove all debris. Subfloor should be clean and smooth.

- •Test vinyl flooring installed before 1980 for asbestos before removal
- •Wear dust mask and gloves throughout removal process
- •Rent a dumpster for large projects - flooring is heavy and bulky
- •Inspect subfloor for damage after removal and repair before new installation
